The land, to the Logans, is the place where they started to become who they are and when they started gaining even a little respect. Also, the land houses all of their fondest memories from where Big Ma and Grandpa first bought the land to where they stand today with David and Mary owning and running the land. The land also carries a certain amount of responsibility with it as well as pride. The Logans have to protect their land, and their home, from Nightriders, Harlan Granger, the bank, and other people like them. I also believe the land has some sort of "power." Not power like magic but power to bring people together like Mr. Morrison and it even brought people of different races together with the cotton fire. The land also has its own heritage with it first belonging to Mr. Granger before the war then making a journey to Paul-Edward Logan when he wanted, and bought, 200 acres of land then 200 more. I, for one, believe that the land is not there for the Logans or for their family but for their heritage and the memories they leave behind .

They still dont have respect. When they got they land they actually lost respect because people thought it was bad for blacks to have land according to whites, however the other blacks in the community do respect them. also it makes them a bigger target for burning because of their land

Maya is right. The land may not earn them respect from the townspeople, Harlan Granger, the Wallaces, and others like them, but it does from the other African-Americans in their community. They can look up to the Logans and respect them because if they found a way to become independent, then they can too. The land even reflects some of the Logan's character. They refuse to let the racially segregated people get in the way of their independence and progress. The land may be just trees and fields to some, but to the Logans it represents their freedom.
