There are many complex levels of friendship in this novel. For example, T.J. and Stacey are one of the many complex friendships in this novel. Their friendship is not the best, but they make it work. T.J. is a firebrand and Stacey is the "good kid" in the friendship. Cassie and Lillian Jean is another example of a complex friendship. Although it wasn't much a friendship, Cassie pretended like it was. Cassie acted like she was Lillian Jean's friend because that was part of her plan for revenge. Lillian Jean bought it and she started telling Cassie all her secrets. When Cassie thought it was a good time, she brought Lillian Jean into the woods and started beating her. Lillian Jean threatened to tell, but Cassie blackmailed her. Jeremy and Stacey are the third complex friendship. Jeremy is a white boy who thinks differently than other white folks. Jeremy brought a gift for Stacey during a Christmas party. Jeremy treats the Logan kids equally and doesn't care if they are colored.

Why do you think Stacey feels so protective of TJ if he is such a "firebrand" and is always getting Stacey in trouble?

Why would you care about someone who is always taking your stuff and messing up your life?

TJ and Stacey are not related! They are family friends and neighbors.

Maybe this is because he sees tj as family no matter what he does he will always forgive him. The problem with this is tj doesnt see it so he doesnt care what happens to stacy. This might change in the near future if tj ever gets out of jail.
