Why is the land so important to the Logans ? The land is important to the logans because Big ma's husband Paul Edward bought it when they barely got out of slavery . Mr.granger wants to take half of the land away because they still owe money to the bank for the mortgage and think they wont be able to pay each year but they do . They also honor the land for how old it is or "ancient ".The Trees give them some sign of relief that they are being protected and as long as Cassie hears the trees talk she's alright . Also the cotton helps them pay for the other half of the land they owe and with segregation back then it was hard to keep the land you would think they were poor but the Logans surprise you with a sudden twist . This is why the Land is so important to the Logans.

What would they have if they did not have the land, could they survive without the land?

Excellent question, Ashley! I think they could survive without the land because their family really is the #1 priority, but I think losing the land would severely damage the Logan family's legacy and pride.

Like Mrs.Donohue said i think they would survive without the land because their family is the number one priority , But the community would also help them ,So they can do funds with the church and collect money . They would be able to survive and especially if Uncle hammer comes and visit them each month to give them money. So ya they would survive without the land with the help of team work . GO TEAM WORK WHOAAA!!!

Although I do agree with you Brisa, I think that another reason they care for the land and it's so important to them is that their income is very dependent on the land. Their income is from cotton, dairy products from their cows, and other crops etc. This is a large portion of what they make. In addition, mid-way through the book, Mary is fired and David is too injured to work. Therefore, at that point, they are completely dependent on their crop money.
