Since the beginning of time, there have been basic rights. As civilizations grew and flourished, however, people's rights became more and more complicated. Social hierarchy emerged, and with it the concept of some people having more rights than others. Slaves, labourers, servants- these people descended the social ladder, coming to sit on the very bottom rung. This rung may be the biggest, but it is also incredibly hard and uncomfortable, with nails poking up and splinters protruding. Quite a difference from the cushioned, jewelled seat of those on the top. Even worse, these people had no view of the future. There is no promise of a long and happy life stretching out before you, reaching toward the horizon. Unfortunately, things are relatively the same. Our society may not have this drastic of a change between social classes, but there is still inequality, and not everyone can exprerience the same rights. The Logans faced inequality and racism often. Lighter skinned people tried to get them to submit, to break under the heavy strain. It is although the people at the top of the social ladder in their community are forcing them to the bottom rung, even though since they are free they are entitled to a seat nearer the top. A hail of inequality, segregation, and racism comes raining down like stones, trying to make them let go of the ladder, to fall. However, the Logans try to remain strong. They have experienced this before, so their mind and spirit have strengthened, preparing to defend themselves from this onslaught. The Logan family is able to overcome this predjudice, but that does not mean racism and inequality will go away. There may still always be someone waiting to overpower them. People say this will never change- there will always be a social class, a ladder. However, if we try to break the ladder, to shatter the inequality and racism, we can use the broken pieces of the social hierachy to build a high platform- so everyone can see the future as equally as the person next to them.
